About Family Promise Essex
Family Promise Essex (formerly Interfaith Hospitality Network) is a not-for-profit organization that provides shelter, professional support services and housing assistance so families experiencing homelessness can find and sustain a home. We do this with help from an extensive network of volunteers, generous individuals and other partners throughout our community.
How We Started
Family Promise of Essex County, Inc. began in 1988 as a non-sectarian response to the crisis of family homelessness in Essex County. FPE is an affiliate of Family Promise, which currently has over 200 affiliates nationwide. Our shelter system consists of a network of congregations that provide families with overnight shelter, meals, and support. In addition, our professional staff provides ongoing case management and related social services. In 2019, over 500 people received FPE services, and approximately 50 percent of this number were children. FPE recognizes that family homelessness and poverty are complex issues that require comprehensive, innovative solutions. Our holistic approach to the crisis of family homelessness includes three main areas: emergency shelter for families; Prevention and Stabilization; and youth and family programming.
